USFL Roundup: Alex McGough, Stallions break away from Gamblers

Alex McGough threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the Birmingham Stallions get past the Houston Gamblers 38-15 on Sunday in Memphis, Tenn.

The Stallions (7-2) clung to a 17-15 lead through three quarters before breaking the game open with three touchdowns in the fourth. CJ Marable plunged in for a 2-yard touchdown, cornerback Matt Hankins returned a fumble by Houston quarterback Kenji Bahar 32 yards for a score and McGough dashed in for a 16-yard TD run.

McGough finished 13-for-21 passing for 208 yards and one interception. He ran for 34 yards on nine carries. Tight end Jace Sternberger and wideout Deon Cain caught McGough’s touchdown passes, as the Stallions were the first USFL team to reach seven wins.

The Gamblers (5-4) controlled possession for 38:21 but were held to five field goals. Kicker Nick Vogel went 5-for-5 with a long of 47 yards.

Generals 37, Stars 33

Running back Darius Victor rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another one as New Jersey defeated Philadelphia in Canton, Ohio.

Victor’s 7-yard scoring run put the Generals (3-6) up 30-16 with 1:46 late in the third quarter, and after a Philadelphia turnover, Trey Williams rushed for a 22-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 37-16.

Stars quarterback Case Cookus threw for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, for 26 yards to Terry Wright and 6 yards to Diondre Overton, to pull within 37-30 with 4:25 left. Cookus completed 25 of 40 passes for 263 yards and three scores, with one interception.

Luis Aguilar’s fourth field goal, a 42-yarder with 1:43 left, drew the Stars within 37-33.

Philadelphia (4-5) then managed to convert on the USFL’s alternative to an onside kick, needing 12 yards on one play to retain possession and drawing a defensive pass interference call on the Generals. Four plays later, however, Cookus was sacked on fourth-and-8 and fumbled, giving New Jersey the ball with 57 seconds to play.
